If you want to stay warm and toasty this winter, furnace maintenance is key. One of the most basic things you can do to keep your furnace in tip top shape is to change the air filters once a month. If your furnace still is not performing at peak efficiency, you might be using the wrong air filter. Below are some tips on how to choose the best air filter for your particular furnace.
Disposable Fiberglass Filters
The disposable fiberglass filter simply prohibits dust, lint and debris
from clogging your furnace. This option is great for people with asthma
or allergies and is very inexpensive. However, they have a MERV rating
of 2-3 and do very little to clean the air.
Disposable Pleaded Filters
Disposable pleaded filters are made of polyester or cotton paper. They
are relative inexpensive and can prevent spores and mites from accumulating.
However, they must be changed frequently and constrict airflow.
Disposable Electrostatic Filters
Disposable electrostatic filters contain electrostatic cotton or paper
fibers that catch small particles. While they are a little bit more on
the pricey side, it pays off because they have a MERV rating of 10.
